Human-Centric Skills for Healthcare
IDH3034/3035
I took this course Fall 2017 and continued the second portion of the course in Spring 2018. We explored several successful businesses like Publix and Disney to explore how we could bring ideas from the hospitality industry into the medical field. We learned a lot about the importance of compassion in medicine and improved our patient interaction skills as well as our public speaking through several projects each semester. Our professor worked for Baptist Health and really helped us understand a different and very important aspect of healthcare in the U.S. and around the world. Italia- America
IDH 4007/4008
This study abroad program first involved a class at FIU where we learned about Italian culture through literature such as Dante's Inferno, Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture by Ross King, and Julius Cesar by William Shakespeare. We also visited many historical sites in Miami to see the Italian influence in America. The purpose of the second semester was to explore Italian culture, art, and history through a modern lens in an interdisciplinary class. Check out the tab Italy Study Abroad for more on the actual study abroad and for a link to my final project. Challenges in Healthcare
IDH3034/3035
I took this course Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. This is one of my favorite courses that I have taken at FIU. We examined many challenges being faced in the U.S. and all over the world when it comes to health through lectures given by professionals in the field and professors from HWCOM, FIU's medical school. We learned about the social determinants of health and how to strive to be socially responsible physicians in the future. We also learned about the importance of cultural humility in the healthcare field as we will encounter many different cultures and customs. The term cultural humility is similar to cultural competence but it is very difficult to have complete cultural competence since there is so much to learn the term cultural humility signifies that we still have much to learn but are open to learning and understanding about them. Health Without Borders
IDS 3183
I took this course during Spring 2020 and I enjoyed it so much! We basically learned the basics about public health and global health. The COVID-19 Pandemic started halfway through the course and flu pandemics is something we had just learned about in class. We covered many important topics and were exposed to many health cultural risks that people all over the world face. Some topics included women's health, infectious diseases, vaccination campaigns, health risks and social determinants of health by region. Our final projects involved studying the major mortalities and morbidities of a certain country and proposing solutions for that countries government and healthcare system to implement for one of those causes of morbidity and/or mortality.
